"I was disappointed by the lack of support in the conflict with Iran"/ Trump criticizes NATO allies

US President Donald Trump has criticized NATO allies ahead of the summit in Ankara, saying he was disappointed with them for their lack of support in the conflict with Iran.

"I was very disappointed with NATO, and if the summit had not been held in Turkey, where my friend is a leader and a very strong person, I might not have attended," Trump said, in the presence of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. 

Trump said the US had not been treated well, repeating his complaints about the lack of European support in the war on Iran that began on February 28. 

"We didn't need any help at all, and in a way, I was testing people, testing them to see if they would be there or not, because I've said for a long time that we helped them, but I'm not sure if they would be there for us," Trump said.

Asked if he was satisfied with the process undertaken by European allies to increase their defense spending, as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte calls what he calls "Trump's Trillion," the US president said he was not.  /CNA
