As Albania faces ongoing demographic challenges, the latest data published by the Institute of Statistics for 2025 sheds light on two worrying phenomena, the increasing influx of foreign asylum seekers and a pronounced trend of emigration of Albanian citizens.

During 2025, Albania registered 144 asylum seekers, an increase of 40 people compared to 2024.

What is striking is the high concentration of applications during the summer and early autumn months. Statistics show that August, September and October hold the lion's share, together accounting for 63.2% of the total number of asylum applications throughout the year.

The vast majority of these asylum seekers come from Egypt with 39.6%, followed by Afghanistan with 11.8% and Palestine with 9.7%. 

The report also highlights a critical reality regarding Albanian citizenship. In 2025, 173 people chose to renounce Albanian citizenship.

The 30-39 age group constitutes the largest group that gave up their Albanian passport, with a full 43.9% of the total of those who have taken this step.

Regarding the acquisition of citizenship, 495 people have acquired it during 2025, with the vast majority, 56.1%, coming from Kosovo, followed by Turkish citizens with 20.1%.
