Two explosions rocked central Damascus on Tuesday, at the same time as French President Emmanuel Macron was meeting with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa during a historic visit.
According to Syrian state media reports, Macron had entered the presidential palace to meet with his Syrian counterpart when the explosions occurred near the Four Seasons Hotel, where the French president was staying.
Syrian authorities did not immediately issue an official statement on the incident. Meanwhile, President Macron's office confirmed that he is safe and that his visit to Syria is continuing as scheduled.
Footage widely shared on social media shows a vehicle engulfed in flames near the hotel. The number of victims and injured has not yet been announced, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The incident comes just days after an explosive device detonated in a cafe near the Palace of Justice in Damascus, killing at least 10 people and wounding 20 others. /CNA
