Ankara Summit/ Turkey Aims for Key Role in NATO

Ahead of the NATO summit to be held in Ankara on July 7-8, Turkey is taking strict security measures to ensure the smooth running of this event, which is considered of strategic importance for the country. The Turkish government aims to use this summit to strengthen its influence within the Alliance, positioning itself not simply as a guardian of the southeastern flank, but as an active and indispensable actor in shaping international security policies.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte praised Turkey's strong military and its rapidly growing defense industry, which numbers about 3,000 companies. Ankara plans to increase military spending to 5% of GDP by 2030, emphasizing that production capabilities and technological innovations will be key to the future of the Alliance. In this context, the defense industry forum will be part of the official summit program for the first time.

In addition to its military role, Turkey wants NATO to broaden its understanding of security, paying greater attention to challenges in the Black Sea and the Middle East. Turkey supports the intensification of NATO cooperation with Middle Eastern countries through the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative. This summit is seen by the Turkish leadership as an opportunity to confirm the country's position as a mediator in international crises and as an irreplaceable partner in one of the Alliance's most sensitive geopolitical areas./ CNA
