Southern Europe is "scorching"/ France, Spain and Portugal face

Southern Europe is experiencing difficult days due to fires that have broken out, amid extreme temperatures. In the south of France, a massive fire continues to spread, causing serious problems even in the development of the stage of the "Tour de France".

Meanwhile, two other fire outbreaks, specifically in Spain and Portugal, are partially under control, but the situation remains complicated, as the region prepares for another heat wave.

In France, a fire that broke out on Saturday in a difficult area near the Canigou mountain range has burned about 45,000 hectares of land. Two people were injured, a firefighter and a resident.

Authorities have ordered the evacuation of thousands of residents in several municipalities, while about 700 firefighters, 200 vehicles and about 10 aircraft are fighting the flames. Due to the situation, the stage of the "Tour de France" will take place without spectators.

In Spain, a fire near the tourist area of ??Costa Brava has burned about 22,000 hectares, but authorities say the situation has stabilized. The cause of the blaze is suspected to have been carelessness and one person has been arrested.

In Portugal, another major fire in the Vouzela area has destroyed over 130,000 hectares of vegetation. Authorities report that about 80% of the fire is under control, as the country faces a severe heatwave and has requested assistance through the European Civil Protection Mechanism.

Authorities in all three countries say most of the fires are caused by humans, but their spread is being exacerbated by high temperatures and droughts linked to climate change. In total, Europe recorded record damage from forest fires in 2025, with more than 10 million hectares burned. /CNA
