To save the "Swift" telescope from falling to Earth / NASA launches

In an unprecedented effort in the history of space exploration, NASA has sent a specially designed spacecraft into space to capture and rescue the Swift telescope, which is in danger of crashing to Earth within the next few months.

The Swift telescope, which serves to study the most powerful explosions in space, has lost altitude due to increased solar activity that has affected the density of the atmosphere, creating friction that slows down and lowers its orbit from 600 kilometers to about 360 kilometers.

The rescue mission has been entrusted to the company "Katalyst Space Technologies", which in a record time of just eight months has designed and built the spacecraft "LINK". This ship, which is the size of a refrigerator, is equipped with three robotic arms, cameras and advanced navigation systems that will enable it to approach, photograph and capture the telescope.

According to scientists, this operation is extremely complex and dangerous, since the Swift telescope, launched in 2004, was never designed to be the subject of such an intervention or to have its orbit changed in this way. The LINK ship will have to move very carefully to attach to the observatory, as any wrong action could be fatal.

If all goes according to plan, "LINK" will use its engines to slowly raise the telescope's orbit over two or three months, returning it to its initial altitude of 600 kilometers.

The success of this mission would mark a new standard in the maintenance of space equipment and could pave the way for future similar missions, where a potential candidate for rescue could also be the famous Hubble telescope. /CNA
