Apocalyptic scenes/ Fire near Costa Brava in Spain, more than 10 communities

A huge fire broke out today near the tourist destination Costa Brava, in northeastern Spain, forcing authorities to restrict movement in more than 10 communities along the Catalan coast.

The flames started in the morning hours near the municipality of La Bisbal d'Empordà, near the city of Girona, about 20 kilometers from the Mediterranean coast.

Strong winds fanned the fire, while a thick cloud of smoke covered the area. For this reason, authorities imposed a traffic ban in several communities, including the tourist town of Platja d'Aro.

"This is a difficult situation, as the fire is not stable and is constantly changing direction," said Catalonia's fire chief, David Borrell.

More than 200 firefighters are working to put out the flames. To facilitate the intervention, authorities have urged Barcelona residents, who usually visit the area during the weekend, to postpone their trips.

Due to the worsening situation caused by the winds, the president of the regional government of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, requested the assistance of the army and the Military Emergency Unit to help extinguish the main fire, as well as another smaller fire that broke out further north.

Authorities stressed that the fire remains active and has not yet been brought under control, while they have called on residents to respect the restrictions imposed for their safety. /CNA
