At least 10 killed in major Russian missile and drone attacks on Kiev

Russian forces have launched a major drone and missile attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, overnight, killing at least 10 people, officials say.

Several neighborhoods were evacuated as the attacks shook buildings across the city, hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russia was preparing for a "massive" attack.

Children were among the "significant number" of victims, said Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kiev's military administration.

"The enemy is deliberately targeting residential areas and killing civilians," he said early Thursday. Russia's Defense Ministry claimed it targeted energy facilities in response to recent Ukrainian attacks.

On Thursday morning, daylight brought clearer images of a crater that appeared to have been caused by the impact of the explosions.

Burning cars, buildings and infrastructure could also be seen next to the bombed-out debris.

Multiple fires broke out across the city and property damage was reported at an ambulance station in the city, which left at least one person seriously injured.

During the night, flares from air defense systems were seen lighting up the sky, and explosions from drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles were heard.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least 10 people have been confirmed killed so far, with the death toll gradually rising in recent hours.

Ukraine's ambassador to the US, Olha Stefanishyna, wrote in a post on X: "Another terrible night for the city's residents, who were forced to spend it in shelters."

"Fires and destruction of civil infrastructure and residential buildings in several neighborhoods of the city."
