Miracle in Venezuela/ Rescued alive after 8 days under rubble

After eight days under the rubble of a building collapsed by twin earthquakes in Venezuela, a man has been pulled out alive in a rescue operation that is being hailed as a miracle.

Hernan Gil was rescued after emergency workers spent more than 100 hours trying to reach him under 140 tons of rubble. International rescue teams from Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, the United States and other countries faced extremely dangerous conditions, where parts of the tunnels built to access the survivor collapsed several times.

Gil was in a small concrete booth in the basement parking lot next to the Galerias Playa Grande shopping center when the earthquakes struck on June 24.

It seems that the cabin's strong structure created a kind of protective shell, saving it from the direct pressure of the 140 tons of material that collapsed above.

Despite the long isolation, the rescue team reported that Gil was in stable condition. Doctors and rescuers managed to get him water and connect him to an intravenous drip.

Members of the Mexican Red Cross described him as an optimistic man who even asked rescuers for specific flavored drinks he liked, while talking to them about his family and the rescue operation itself.

The June 24 earthquakes in Venezuela have so far caused around 2,300 confirmed deaths, while tens of thousands of others still remain missing. /CNA
