Loan approved for electrification of Tirana-Durrës-Rinas railway/Half of

The loan agreement for the electrification of the Tirana-Durrës-Rinas railway has been approved by the Laws Committee.

It is reported that the transition from the initial project with fuel-powered trains to electric ones costs around 22 million euros, while half of the value will be a grant from the EU.

Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Enkelejfa Muçaj, stated that support from the EU comes through the Western Balkans framework.

Muçaj announced that two substations will be built that cover energy supply, testing, certification and commissioning of the electrification system.

"It is supported by 11.5 million euros, plus 50% of the total investment value for electrification is supported by the European Union through the Western Balkans framework. So with a value of almost the same value in the form of a grant for these works which we will only mention for information purposes: the complete electrification of the Durrës-Tirana railway segment, the new branch towards Tirana international airport, the supply of electro-railway equipment, the construction and installation of the switching system, which is the electric line that supplies electricity to trains. Also, the construction of two important substations at the Tirana and Durrës point, so not only the electrification of the line but also the substations that cover the energy supply, testing, certification and commissioning of the electrification system",  said Muçaj. /CNA
