Devastating earthquakes in Venezuela / Death toll rises

The death toll from two devastating earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela on June 24 has risen to 3,342 dead and 16,740 injured, according to the latest data published by Venezuelan authorities.

The government announced that search and rescue operations have now moved to the stage of extracting bodies, as hopes of finding survivors under the rubble have faded.

Meanwhile, authorities have not yet published the official number of missing persons, while the United Nations estimates that it could reach up to 50,000, while other sources speak of around 10,000 missing.

Over 150 unidentified victims are buried in the La Esperanza cemetery, in the Katia La Mar area of ??La Guaira state. Each grave is marked with an identification number and date of death, so that family members can identify them later.

International rescue teams, with over 4,000 personnel from various countries, have begun to withdraw, as their mission is now focused on extracting victims from the rubble. Officials warn that the decomposition of the bodies also poses a risk to public health.

Acting President Delsy Rodríguez declared that, despite criticism of the management of the crisis, there will be no social unrest in the country.

The two earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5, caused extensive damage in several regions of the country. According to the government, over 17,000 people have been left homeless, with many of them still living on the streets or in parks. /CNA
