US President Donald Trump delivered a speech on the eve of Independence Day at Mount Rushmore, where he called the holiday one of the most extraordinary days in the history of the world.

He called on Americans to defend the freedoms the nation's founders established 250 years ago against what he has portrayed as the "communist" threat posed by progressive Democrats.

In New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani delivered his speech on the country's 250th anniversary, where he presented America as a nation that works every day towards the perfection in which it was conceived.

Glenn Brooks, who was pardoned by Trump for his role in the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, said he was grateful to be attending the grand event. Trump will deliver another speech on the National Mall later, before what is being billed as a historically massive fireworks display.

But for all the festivities, there are also safety concerns as potentially record-breaking temperatures sweep across much of the Midwest and East Coast. Officials have warned holiday-goers to stay hydrated and take air-conditioned breaks as needed. /CNA
