"Funeral of the century"/ Funeral ceremony for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

Farewell ceremonies for Iran's former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei have officially begun, with a massive procession through the streets of the capital, Tehran. The event is being described by Iranian authorities as the "funeral of the century", with between 12 and 20 million people expected to attend.

Khamenei, who led Iran for more than 35 years, was killed in a coordinated US-Israeli airstrike in February of this year. The attack hit his compound in Tehran, also killing several senior officials and members of his family.

After departing from Tehran, the procession will follow a long route that includes the holy city of Qom, as well as the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala. The official funeral is scheduled to take place on Thursday in the northeastern city of Mashhad.

The ceremony was originally scheduled for March, but was postponed by Iranian officials, who stated that the high volume of requests to participate and the need to prepare appropriate infrastructure to accommodate the large crowds made it impossible to hold it at that time.

As the procession unfolds, attention remains on the issue of succession. Khamenei's son, Mojtaba, has been officially named as the country's leader.

However, his conspicuous absence from funeral ceremonies and lack of public appearances since taking power has fueled much speculation.

Internationally, this development comes at a time when a fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran is still in place. US President Donald Trump confirmed that talks on a long-term peace deal have been temporarily suspended to make way for developments related to the funeral. /CNA
