Zelensky seeks NATO help/Urgent need for air defense systems

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is using the NATO summit in Ankara to urgently call on allies to provide advanced air defense systems. The appeal comes after a recent wave of intense Russian attacks on Kiev, which have caused numerous civilian casualties and severely damaged residential infrastructure.

According to Zelensky, it is inexplicable that the world production of defense systems has not yet increased to the level required to protect the population from what he calls "ballistic terror."

Ukraine has struggled to stop Russian ballistic missiles, which travel at extremely high speeds, due to a lack of Patriot missile defense systems. Zelensky has urged European countries to hand over their current stockpiles, arguing that they are vital for saving lives now, not stored away.

The summit in Turkey also serves as an important diplomatic arena, where Zelensky is expected to hold high-level meetings, including a substantive conversation with Donald Trump.

Kiev's strategy is to convince allies that their recent campaign of deep-sea drone attacks on oil refineries and military targets on Russian territory – even as far as Omsk, 2,500 km from the border – is showing the weakness of Russian defenses.

These attacks have caused severe fuel shortages and power outages in Russia, leading to insecurity and long lines of citizens for supplies.

Despite the escalation, Zelensky insists that his goal remains to exert enough pressure to force Vladimir Putin towards talks for a "dignified" peace, which does not include the surrender of territories in the Donbas region.

However, time is critical: Kiev seeks to end the war as soon as possible, before another grueling winter begins, relying on a combination of military force and intense diplomacy./ CNA
