Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's funeral/ Political showdown amid threats of
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's funeral

Tehran was transformed into a massive political spectacle during the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in Israeli-American airstrikes on February 28. The funeral procession, carrying the coffins of the supreme leader and four members of his family, marched through the streets of the capital in front of a large crowd of supporters, in a ceremony meticulously choreographed to convey messages of defiance and revenge.

During the procession, religious flags symbolized blood and martyrdom, while posters targeting President Donald Trump as the main target of Iranian anger were held aloft by participants.

Messages from government communications apps encouraged the population to seek inevitable revenge, warning that Iran's opponents "will pay dearly."

However, the reality on the streets of Tehran remains divided. For many Iranians, exhausted by inflation that has reached nearly 80%, the aftermath of two wars in a year and the bloody suppression of January protests, this funeral is not a national unifying event.

Outside the free food stations, citizens expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of jobs and the dire economic situation, staying away from official ceremonies.

Attention now turns to the future of the Islamic Republic under the new leadership. The absence of Khamenei's son, Mojtaba, who has been designated as the third supreme leader but has not appeared in public since the attack that killed his father, has raised serious questions about the stability of the regime.

While the new government seeks to keep alive negotiations on easing sanctions and unlocking assets to save the economy, the harsh rhetoric of the "fist of defiance" in Enqelab Square remains the main symbol that the regime wants to show its enemies at home and abroad./ CNA
