Nigel Farage resigns as MP

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage announced that he was resigning as Member of Parliament for Clacton and would stand in the subsequent by-election, which he called a "people against the establishment" vote.

"I have decided that the people of Clacton should be the judges of my actions," he said. "It is a chance to put two fingers in the face of the whole establishment."

Reform has advanced in opinion polls since the Labour Party won a landslide election in 2024, but its leader has been embroiled in a number of controversies over his finances in recent months.

He has been under investigation by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards since mid-May after failing to declare a £5 million gift he received from British-Thai cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne in 2024.

Farage has said the gift was not political and that he had "no obligation" to declare it.
