Marine Le Pen found guilty of embezzlement of public funds/ Presidential

The Paris Court of Appeal has confirmed the verdict convicting the leader of the far-right National Rally party, Marine Le Pen, of embezzlement of public funds.

According to the verdict, Le Pen was sentenced to three years in prison, two of which are suspended, and one year of house arrest with an electronic bracelet. She was also fined 100,000 euros.

Regarding political rights, the court ruled to suspend the right to stand for election for 15 months. It is not yet decided whether this measure prevents Le Pen from running in the 2027 French presidential election.

Her candidacy may still be possible, as Le Pen herself has previously stated that she will not run for the presidency if she is convicted of a criminal offense that requires serving a sentence with an electronic bracelet.

We recall that in the first instance, last year, Le Pen was sentenced to a five-year ban from running in elections, with immediate effect, for embezzlement of European Parliament funds.

If that decision were to remain in force, she would not be able to participate in the presidential elections scheduled for April 18 and May 2, 2027, paving the way for the candidacy of RN President Jordan Bardella.

Marine Le Pen is expected to react publicly on Tuesday evening, where she will also talk about her political future. /CNA
