If you needed another reason to say goodbye to smoking for good, a new study just gave it to you: Just 100 cigarettes over a lifetime is enough to increase your risk of heart disease and premature death.
Researchers from Johns Hopkins University, who studied the smoking habits of more than 300,000 adults for nearly 20 years, report that both men and women who smoked just two cigarettes a day appeared to have a 60% higher risk of death from any cause, compared to those who never smoked.
In addition, the smoking group appeared to have a 50% higher risk of heart disease, according to the study published in PLOS Medicine.
"Smoking is a known risk factor for heart disease. It damages the lining of blood vessels and accelerates plaque formation and the onset of coronary heart disease," the researchers said.
In fact, reducing tobacco consumption may not be enough to reverse the damage, the study suggests. Although current smokers have a higher risk of death than those who have quit, former smokers still have an increased risk of heart disease, even 20 years after quitting./CNA
