Growing threat of resistant microbes/ Scientists aim for innovative treatments

Scientists in the UK are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to tackle the growing threat of resistant microbes. Antimicrobial resistance, the increasing resistance of bacteria or viruses to antibiotics, is estimated to cost the lives of 39 million people by 2050.

In fact, one in six laboratory-confirmed bacterial infections are now resistant to antibiotics, according to global data.

For these reasons, the scientific community is turning to artificial intelligence, hoping to develop innovative antimicrobial treatments. About 50 researchers will participate in the three-year initiative, which begins early next year.

"Antimicrobial resistance is one of the biggest challenges we face worldwide. Infections that are resistant to treatment are increasingly difficult to treat, posing an increasing risk to patients," the researchers said.

Researchers will focus on a range of resistant microbes that the World Health Organization has identified as priority pathogens: Aspergillus, Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. /CNA
