Russian aircraft intercepted/French fighter jets scrambled 11 times over the

French fighter jets took off 11 times last week as part of NATO's Baltic Air Patrol mission.

The news was announced today by the spokesman for the French armed forces, describing these incidents as "provocations" at a higher level than usual.

The NATO mission protects the airspace of the three Baltic states, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, through the rotation of member countries' fighter jets, compensating for their lack of air capabilities.

Aircraft immediately take off to identify and intercept unknown aircraft or those that do not comply with international procedures.

French spokesman Guillaume Vernet said the unusually high number of intercepts could indicate that Russia is trying to demonstrate its strength during the week of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

According to him, the French squadron deployed in the Baltics carried out several intercepts of Russian military aircraft flying without flight plans or radio communication. Among the identified aircraft were armed fighter jets, reconnaissance aircraft and military transports.

These incidents follow a series of cases where military drones have violated the airspace of Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, adding to concerns that the war in Ukraine could increase tensions along NATO's northern borders with Russia. /CNA
