High temperatures in Spain cause 101 deaths

Spain has recorded a record number of deaths linked to high temperatures during the month of May, signaling the growing impact of heatwaves that are occurring earlier than usual.

According to the MoMo daily mortality monitoring system, 101 heat-related deaths were recorded during May, the highest figure recorded for this month since monitoring began in 2015.

Health authorities point out that this number is 3.6 times higher than the average number of deaths related to high temperatures during the month of May in the last ten years, reflecting the severe consequences of climate change and extreme weather episodes.

Spain's Health Minister, Mónica García, stated that the risk is increasing as heat waves are appearing earlier and earlier in the year.

"The problem is no longer just that temperatures are higher, but that the heat is coming earlier and the human body does not have time to adapt," she said during the presentation of the 2026 National Plan for Preventive Actions against the Health Effects of Extreme Temperatures.

According to the Ministry of Health, the risk of mortality increases by 9.1 to 10.7 percent for every degree that temperatures exceed the threshold considered dangerous to health.

Long-term data shows that between 2015 and 2025, Spain recorded an estimated 27,564 deaths related to high temperatures. The worst year was 2022 with 4,789 fatalities, while 2025 ranked second with 3,832 deaths.

Experts warn that the increase in the frequency and intensity of heat waves poses a serious challenge to public health, requiring stronger preventive measures and greater awareness among citizens about the risks posed by exposure to extreme temperatures./ CNA
