Magyar meets Merz: Hungary wants to reposition itself as a reliable partner

Hungary's new Prime Minister, Peter Magyar, expressed today in Berlin during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, his intention to reposition his country as a reliable partner within the European Union.

Merz called on Magyar to support the EU's collective policy towards Ukraine, following a different course from that of his predecessor, Viktor Orban.

Meanwhile, Magyar pledged that Hungary will henceforth be an honest and reliable partner within the European Union.

"Of course we will not always agree, but we will not veto just for reasons of principle," he assured, although he reiterated that his country would continue to refrain from sending weapons or troops to Ukraine and that it intends to block the start of EU accession negotiations with Ukraine as long as the rights of the Hungarian minority in the country remain restricted.

The Hungarian prime minister also harshly criticized his country's president, Tamas Szulok, whom he described as "Orban's puppet," arguing that in the two years since he took office, he has not fulfilled his duties as head of state.

"He stood idly by while Orban sold out our homeland and turned Hungary into the most corrupt state in the EU ," he said. /CNA
