"It negatively affects young children"/ Sweden urges parents to put

The Public Health Authority in Sweden has urged parents to limit the use of mobile phones during time spent with children, after studies showed that excessive screen use by adults negatively affects young children.

In new guidelines published on Monday, authorities recommend that parents put their phones away when they are with their children and use them only when necessary or when using them together with them.

"Keep your phone away when you are with your child. Use it only if necessary or when using it together with your child ," the authority's statement said.

According to experts, parents' digital habits directly affect children's behavior. The study conducted by the Swedish agency showed that frequent phone use by parents can harm interaction with children and that children of parents who spend a lot of time in front of screens tend to develop the same habits.

Authorities also recommend creating screen-free zones at home, such as the bedroom or dining table, and urge parents to be careful about posting photos and videos of their children online. The Swedish Minister for Social Affairs, Jakob Forssmed, said many people do not realize how big an impact parents' phone use has on their children.

Meanwhile, Sweden has long imposed limits on the amount of time children should spend in front of screens. Guidelines suggest that children under the age of two should not use screens at all for non-school purposes, while for the 2-5 age group a maximum of one hour per day is recommended. For children aged 6-12, the limit is two hours, while for adolescents aged 13-18 up to three hours per day.

Authorities also advise against using digital devices before bedtime and to keep phones, tablets and computers out of the bedroom at night. From the 2026-2027 school year, Sweden will also implement a national ban on smartphones in schools for students up to the ninth grade, or 15-16 years old. /CNA
