Iran and US report new wave of airstrikes in Persian Gulf

Airstrikes between the US and Iran resumed over the weekend, after each side claimed to have struck military targets near the Strait of Hormuz.

US Central Command (Centcom) said it carried out "self-defensive strikes on Iranian radar and drone command and control sites in Goruk, Iran, and Qeshm Island this weekend."

Meanwhile, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted an air base used by US forces in retaliation, but did not say where.

Earlier, US media reported that President Donald Trump had sought "changes" to the final terms of a proposal that could lead to a peace deal, and there were no signs of any progress.

The US said its strikes on Saturday and Sunday were in response to "aggressive Iranian actions that included the downing of a US MQ-1 drone operating over international waters".

In a post on X, Centcom said U.S. fighters struck Iranian military air defenses, a ground control station and two drones that it said “posed a clear threat to vessels transiting regional waters.” No American servicemen or women were injured in the attacks, the military said.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard said it struck the air base the US had used to carry out attacks on its communications tower on Sirri Island in the Persian Gulf, about 65 km from Iran's southern coastline.

The Iranian military added that its response would be "completely different" if US aggression "recurs," according to IRGC remarks reported by Iran's semi-official Fars news agency.

Kuwait's military said it was "facing hostile missile and drone attacks" using its air defense systems, but did not specify where the intercepts were taking place.

Tehran targeted an air base in Kuwait last week in response to previous US airstrikes, which it said were carried out to prevent Iranian ships and missile attacks from laying mines around the shipping channel.

While a ceasefire came into effect on April 8, Donald Trump has repeatedly suggested that the US and Iran were close to a permanent agreement and that negotiations were progressing, but so far no formal agreement has been reached.

The latest version of the deal included a 60-day cessation of violence, a call for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a framework for reopening negotiations on Iran's nuclear program, according to the BBC's US partner CBS News.

Roughly a fifth of global shipments of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) typically pass through the Gulf shipping channel, with the de facto trade embargo putting upward pressure on fuel prices worldwide.
