Hegseth: US military ready to resume fighting in Persian Gulf if necessary

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has told the media that the US military is ready to resume fighting in the Persian Gulf if necessary and is in a stronger position to do so than on the first day of the conflict.

US President Donald Trump is considering a preliminary deal that would open the Strait of Hormuz and begin nuclear weapons talks with Iran, but he gave no sign of a decision after meeting with advisers on Friday.

Meanwhile, the US military on Friday disabled a Gambian-flagged ship that was heading towards Iran.

Hezbollah launched a barrage of rocket and drone fire into northern Israel, forcing schools to close and a hospital to be moved underground. As Israeli troops advance further into southern Lebanon, the military has warned of intensified attacks by the Iran-backed militant group./ CNA
