Trump meets in the White House Situation Room/ No final decision on Iran

US President Donald Trump held a meeting with top aides to make a final decision on a framework for extending the ceasefire with Iran, but the meeting ended without clarity on the next steps.

Trump said that Iran must agree to never have a nuclear weapon or bomb, that the Strait of Hormuz be reopened to unrestricted maritime traffic in both directions, and that any mines in the waterway be destroyed.

The meeting with senior aides was held in the White House Situation Room, which is used to handle major crises.

On Thursday, the two countries had agreed to a framework agreement, known as a memorandum of understanding, pending approval by Trump and Iran's leadership. The deal is said to extend the ceasefire for 60 days and launch talks on the future of Iran's nuclear program.

Since the ceasefire took effect on April 8, Trump has repeatedly suggested that the US and Iran are close to a deal and negotiations are progressing, but so far there have been no substantial results.

The US has long demanded that Iran stop producing highly enriched uranium and destroy its existing stockpiles, which in theory could be used to create nuclear weapons.

Iran, on the other hand, says its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and denies it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Both Iran and the United States have accused each other of violating the ceasefire in recent days.

On Thursday, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted a US air base in Kuwait, which was the source of earlier attacks on Bandar Abbas, a strategic Iranian port city near the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command said the attack on Kuwait was a "serious violation of the ceasefire".

The US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 28. Iran responded by attacking Israel and US-allied states in the Persian Gulf and closing the Strait of Hormuz, which has sent global oil prices soaring. /CNA
