Two World War II bombs defused in Germany / Over 1,600 people evacuated

Bomb disposal experts in the northwestern German city of Osnabrück were alerted to two bombs left over from World War II, while around 1,600 people were ordered to leave their homes for hours.

One of the two unexploded 50kg bombs was deactivated and the other underwent a controlled explosion, city officials said.

The bombs were found on the site of a former rail freight terminal, where a new, virtually car-free neighborhood will be created, with potential housing for around 3,500 people.

During the construction work, there have been eight such decontamination operations so far, during which 23 bombs were defused, officials said. The largest evacuation that resulted was that of 20,000 people in July 2025. /CNA
