British soldier dies during training in northern Iraq

A British soldier has died in an accident during military training in northern Iraq.

According to the British Ministry of Defense, his family has been notified of his loss, while further details about the circumstances of the accident will be released later.

"The soldier's family has been informed and has requested a period of silence before further details are released. Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends at this sad time ," the Ministry of Defense statement said.

Some British troops remain in Iraq as part of a coalition supporting Operation Shader, designed to prevent a resurgence of the Islamic State group.

The mission includes intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, as well as offensive operations in support of partner forces. /CNA
