Iran warns: Israeli attacks in Lebanon endanger ceasefire with US

Iran has warned that Israel's attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon could jeopardize a ceasefire reached with the United States, after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered strikes on targets in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the agreement with the US is a clear ceasefire on all fronts, including Lebanon, and that any violation on one front constitutes a violation of the ceasefire as a whole.

Netanyahu announced that Israel would strike "terrorist targets" in the Dahieh area of ??Beirut in response to rocket and drone attacks carried out by Hezbollah, the Iran-backed group.

On the other hand, US President Donald Trump stated that talks with Iran are continuing at a rapid pace and said that he has held talks with both Netanyahu and representatives of Hezbollah.

"I had a very productive conversation with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. There will be no troops entering Beirut and any forces that were on the way have been turned back," Trump wrote on "Social Truth."

According to him, Hezbollah representatives have also agreed to cease attacks, while Israel will refrain from striking the group if the ceasefire is respected.

The Lebanese president's office announced that Lebanese authorities have received confirmation from Hezbollah of its acceptance of a US proposal that envisages a mutual cessation of attacks. Under the plan, Israel would stop attacks on the southern suburbs of Beirut, while Hezbollah would suspend attacks on Israeli territory.

Meanwhile, Iranian media outlet Tasnim reported that Tehran may suspend indirect negotiations with the US if Israel continues military operations in Lebanon. The report also warned of the possibility of activation of other regional fronts, including the strategic Bab al-Mandab area at the entrance to the Red Sea.

Tensions between Iran and the US have also increased in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy shipping lanes. The exchange of attacks over the weekend has affected global markets, sending the price of Brent crude oil up nearly $5 a barrel to $97.44.

Despite Trump's optimistic statements about a permanent agreement between Washington and Tehran, no official agreement has been reached so far, while the situation in the Middle East remains tense. /CNA
