South Korea is becoming a medical tourism hotspot

South Korea is becoming one of the most sought-after destinations for medical tourism, as more and more travelers choose to undergo comprehensive health checkups during their vacations.

According to South Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare, the country welcomed over 2 million foreign patients in 2025, a 71.7 percent increase from the previous year. Visitors come mainly from China, Japan, Taiwan and the United States.

The growing interest is linked to lower medical costs, short waiting times, and the ability to perform a wide range of examinations in one day. Korean clinics offer packages that include blood tests, X-rays, ultrasounds, magnetic resonance imaging, endoscopy, and other diagnostic examinations.

Many foreign patients report that the procedures only take a few hours and are carried out in an organized manner, with support in English or through interpreters. After the check-ups are completed, they receive the results in English and, if necessary, are referred for further consultations or treatments.

Health sector representatives in South Korea emphasize that the country's system focuses on prevention and early detection of diseases, while state-regulated prices make healthcare more affordable compared to many other countries.

Korean authorities consider medical tourism a sector of strategic importance and are continuing investments to attract patients from around the world, aiming to consolidate South Korea as one of the leading international healthcare centers./ CNA
