The European Commission has warned that the war in the Middle East could put up to 1.3 million jobs in the European Union at risk, particularly in energy-intensive industries.
During the presentation of the 2026 European Semester Package, Commissioner for Employment, Roxana Minzatu, said that the increase in energy prices as a result of the conflict is putting great pressure on the European economy.
According to her, low-income families will be most affected by high energy costs, so she urged member states to take targeted measures to support the most vulnerable groups.
The Commission estimates that the war, which began after Israeli and United States attacks on Iran in late February, has slowed economic growth in Europe and increased inflation due to rising energy prices.
Another concern raised by the Commission is the lack of skilled labour. Some 77% of European companies report that the lack of professional skills remains a serious obstacle to investment, especially in strategic sectors such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies and semiconductors.
The European Semester package also emphasizes the need to strengthen the EU's competitiveness through investment, easing administrative procedures, and reducing strategic dependencies on countries like China and the United States.
The Commission led by Ursula von der Leyen considers increasing competitiveness as one of the main priorities in the face of growing geopolitical uncertainties. /CNA
