Trump names acting director of US national intelligence

US President Donald Trump has appointed Bill Pulte as acting director of national intelligence (DNI).

Pulte is currently director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), which oversees mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

The 38-year-old will remain in that role, while also taking on the role of acting DNI.

Pulte will take over the position from Tulsi Gabbard, a former Hawaii congresswoman and foreign war skeptic who resigned from her job after her husband's cancer diagnosis.

The director of national intelligence is involved in important security issues as the US continues its war with Iran.

In a Trump post on Social Truth, the president cited Pulte's "long experience in managing America's most sensitive issues, the safety and stability of markets, and over $10 trillion in Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, a significant increase from where it was just 12 months ago."

During his role as FHFA director, Pulte has gone after Trump's political enemies, accusing figures such as Democratic Senator Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James of mortgage fraud.

Pulte is originally from the southern US state of Florida. His grandfather, William J. Pulte, was the founder of residential homebuilding company PulteGroup, one of the largest homebuilding firms in the country. /CNA
