Killed in February/ Iran plans three-day funeral for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

Iran is planning a three-day funeral for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in Israeli-American airstrikes on the first day of the war, on February 28.

The funeral will be public and will include full honors. Ali Khamenei, who led Iran for nearly 37 years, was killed at the age of 86 by a bombing at his home in central Tehran.

The funeral was originally scheduled for March 4, but was postponed due to the war. While no date has yet been given, an official said it will be around mid-June.

The funeral procession will be held in Tehran, as well as in the holy cities of Qom and the northern city of Mashhad, where Khamenei will be buried. In Tehran, the ceremony will last at least 24 hours and, according to foreign media, is expected to gather 15 to 20 million people.

Ali Khamenei's son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was named as his successor in early March. He has not appeared in public since being injured in an explosion and has made statements only via text messages. /CNA
