Rubio: Netanyahu's plan to occupy 70% of Gaza conflicts with Trump's

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Congress that the Trump administration's proposal calls for an end to Hamas rule and for Gaza to be governed by an entity not affiliated with the organization.

During a hearing at the Capitol, Rubio was asked by Representative Rose DeLauro, the top Democrat on the House Budget Committee, about the US government's stance on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to occupy 70% of the Gaza Strip in order to neutralize Hamas.

In response, Rubio clarified that Netanyahu's specific stance is not included in US President Donald Trump's 20-point plan to end the war between Israel and Hamas.

According to the US Secretary of State, Washington's plan aims to end Hamas rule in Gaza and rebuild the region after the end of hostilities.

"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's goal of putting 70% of the Gaza Strip under Israeli control in order to defeat Hamas is not part of the Trump administration's plan to end the conflict. We have a plan — it doesn't foresee that," Rubio said, referring to the prospect of occupying 70 percent of Gaza.

"Ultimately, we understand that what we want, and I think what the Israelis would ultimately want, is a Gaza governed by an entity that is not Hamas ," he added.

Rubio's remarks reflect the US administration's position that post-war governance of Gaza should be transferred to an administrative authority not affiliated with Hamas, as part of a broader effort to end the conflict and rebuild the Palestinian enclave. /CNA
