US targets Iran's Qeshm island near Strait of Hormuz

Tensions in the Middle East remain high, with US forces carrying out attacks on the strategically important island of Qeshm near the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran launches missiles and drones towards Kuwait and Bahrain.

The island was once considered a free trade zone and a tourist paradise. It is also known for its Geopark, which was recognized by UNESCO in 2006.

However, at the same time, it is considered "key" to control of the Strait of Hormuz and has become a military stronghold of Tehran.

As Al Jazeera writes, after the start of the war between the United States, Israel and Iran, Qeshm turned into a fortress on the front line, gaining critical importance for the strategic balance in the region.
