A flight from Belgrade is stopped at Tivat airport / Montenegrin police check

A plane with 90 passengers, which arrived in Montenegro from Serbia on Wednesday, has been stopped at Tivat airport where local police are conducting police checks on the passengers.

Montenegrin police announced that increased checks are being carried out at the airport ahead of the European Union - Western Balkans summit, which will be held in Tivat on June 5.

"In this context, a charter flight was scheduled at the Tivat Airport border crossing on the Belgrade-Tivat route, with which around 90 Serbian citizens arrived in Montenegro this morning ," the Police statement said.

The police added that they are conducting "controls and verification of the reason for the arrival and stay of persons". They also announced that "restrictive measures will be taken in accordance with the law if there are legal grounds to do so".

Montenegrin police did not immediately respond to a question from Radio Free Europe (RFE/RL) regarding reports by the Podgorica-based newspaper Vijesti that the passengers who arrived on this flight were "persons of interest from a security perspective" and that they "mostly had criminal records."

Toni Janovic, a member of parliament from the ruling party, the Europe Today Movement, praised the reaction of the authorities in Montenegro. He wrote on the social network X that “a group of people with extensive files decided to come to Tivat, precisely at the time of the largest international gathering in Montenegro, when the highest security measures are in force.”

“A very interesting choice of terms,” Janovi? wrote, adding that this event shows that hybrid and other security threats are a reality of the modern world, but also that Montenegro has institutions that take their work seriously.

The Serbian Police also did not respond to REL's questions regarding reports by some Montenegrin media that these individuals "are tasked with unofficially securing the presence of Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i? at the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Tivat."

The Serbian presidency declined to comment. Meanwhile, national airline Air Serbia did not respond to questions about whether the plane in question belonged to its company, and who had leased the plane.

The European Union - Western Balkans Summit will bring together leaders of the 27 EU member states and six countries in the region in Tivat. The participation was also confirmed by the president of Serbia, who boycotted the last summit held in Brussels in December 2025.

This year's meeting in Montenegro has particular significance, as it is the only country in the region that currently has a genuine opportunity for membership. /REL
