US President Donald Trump has confirmed that he had a tense conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding Israel's military actions in Lebanon and the risk of escalating conflict in the region.

In an interview with the New York Post, Trump admitted that he used harsh tones during a phone call with Netanyahu, urging him to reduce tensions and avoid expanding military operations against Hezbollah.

"You said, 'Are you crazy? What are you doing? I helped you stay out of jail.' Is that true? Did you speak to him in those terms?" the interviewer asked.

"Yes," Trump replied. "I was a little concerned about his ongoing war with Lebanon." Trump said he asked the Israeli leader to de-escalate the situation, telling the newspaper's podcast: "I said, 'Bibi, we have to stop this.'"

According to media reports, the US president was particularly angered by Israeli threats to strike the Lebanese capital, Beirut, as further escalation could damage diplomatic efforts to resume negotiations with Iran.

However, Trump stressed that relations with Netanyahu remain strong despite the disagreement.

"We worked very well together. I really like Bibi and I collaborate very well with her," he said.

After the call on Sunday, Trump described the communication with the Israeli leader as "very productive," underlining that cooperation between the United States and Israel remains unchanged.

Trump's statements come as Washington is trying to push for a broader solution to conflicts in the Middle East. The US president has reiterated that Iran should not develop nuclear weapons and that navigation through the Strait of Hormuz should remain open to international trade.

His comments offer a rare public glimpse into tensions between the two close allies, who have for years maintained a common front on security and political issues in the Middle East./ CNA
