Germany seizes tons of cocaine worth 500 million euros/ Two people arrested

German authorities have seized more than eight tons of cocaine hidden in a container that was declared as a cargo of cocoa beans, in a major operation against international drug trafficking.

According to investigators, the drugs were discovered on February 9 in the Port of Wilhelmshaven, while their value on the illegal market is estimated at around 500 million euros.

The container had arrived from West Africa and was headed to Spain. During the search, officers discovered over 400 packages wrapped in black aluminum foil, each containing around 20 compressed blocks of cocaine.

After the seizure, the cargo was destroyed in Germany, while the container continued its journey to Barcelona as part of investigations to identify the organizers of the criminal network.

On May 14, authorities arrested two suspects in El Ejido. According to investigators, one of them, a manager of an import company, is also suspected of being linked to a previous cocaine trafficking case uncovered by Spanish customs.

The two arrested are expected to face legal proceedings in Spain and risk serious prison sentences if found guilty.

The case comes at a time when European authorities are grappling with record levels of drug trafficking. According to the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA), European Union countries seized 419 tonnes of cocaine in 2023, the highest level ever recorded.

In recent reports, Spain and Germany have been identified as among the countries that have made the largest cocaine seizures in Europe, reflecting the growing challenges of the fight against organized crime and international drug trafficking./ CNA
