Do you have blurred vision from sitting in front of screens for too long? Here's what you should do

Do you have blurred vision from sitting in front of screens for too long?

Eye experts at the Mayo Clinic in the US say this can create some temporary vision problems.

According to them, if you stare at a computer monitor or mobile phone for too long, and then experience temporary blurred vision, this is likely due to the drying of the moisture layer on the front surface of your eye.

"If the moisture level is not right and uniform, and with the right quality and quantity, vision tends to blur. That's why people may notice that they have blurry vision, at one point they see in a hazy way. But only a little later the vision clears up on its own," says Dr. Muriel Shornak, an optometrist at the Mayo Clinic.

Blinking spreads a significant amount of tears over the front surface of the eye.

"Whenever we are doing something that requires special attention to visual details, our eye blink rate drops. Instead of a normal blink rate of every 5-7 seconds, when you look at a screen you may only blink every 15-20 seconds." "Eye blink is extremely important, as it guarantees our comfort. This is definitely a cost-effective action for us," says Dr. Shornak.

So the next time you find yourself staring at a screen, try the 20-20-20 rule.

"Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 meters away, blink 20 times for 20 seconds," she says.

It may also help to use it periodically and throughout the day as a drop solution that can be obtained from a pharmacy without a prescription.
