Putin and Zelensky give signals for negotiations / Still no guarantee of an end

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the war in Ukraine could end quickly if Kiev accepts the compromise reached during his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Anchorage, Alaska. According to Putin, Russia is ready to sign a peace treaty with Ukraine and reach a solution through diplomatic means.

On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on Putin to stop the war and proposed a face-to-face meeting in Switzerland, Turkey or an Arab country, with US supervision, for a possible ceasefire.

In an open letter, Zelensky stressed that the war is bringing increasing consequences for Russia, citing Ukrainian drone attacks, rising prices and growing discontent among Russian citizens. He also claimed that Russia has suffered significant losses on the front in recent months.

Putin, meanwhile, insisted that Russian forces are advancing on the front lines and that Ukraine is facing a shortage of military personnel. He hinted that he is ready to sign a deal with Zelensky, even as he continues to question the legitimacy of the Ukrainian president's term.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow had been informed of Zelensky's letter and that Putin would be briefed on its contents. He said Zelensky could visit Moscow "at any time" for a meeting with the Russian president.

Despite the statements of the two leaders, it remains unclear whether these proposals will lead to concrete negotiations or will remain only political messages, while the war continues with no imminent solution on the horizon. /CNA
