New study: Mediterranean diet reduces stroke risk in women by 25%

A study published in Neurology Open Access found that following the Mediterranean diet can reduce the risk of stroke by up to 25% for women who follow it most closely.

Study author Sophia S. Wang said these results support the idea that a healthy diet is critical for stroke prevention.

The study included more than 105,600 women (average age 53 years), who had no history of stroke at the start of the study. The participants completed a questionnaire about their diet and were followed for about 21 years.

During the period, 4,083 strokes were recorded, including 3,358 ischemic strokes and 725 hemorrhagic strokes.

The study has limitations, including that it is based on self-reported data, which may affect accuracy.

The authors say further studies are needed to confirm these findings and understand the mechanisms behind them. /CNA
