Study: This simple bedtime habit could slow down glaucoma

A new scientific study suggests that a very simple change before bed could help glaucoma patients slow the progression of the disease and protect their vision.

According to the study published on January 27 in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, sleeping without a pillow can reduce intraocular pressure, a key factor that, when elevated in patients with glaucoma, leads to optic nerve damage and irreversible vision loss.

Researchers found that about two-thirds of glaucoma patients experienced significant increases in eye pressure when they slept with several pillows under their heads. Giving up pillows, they say, could serve as a simple, non-pharmacological alternative before patients move on to medications or laser therapy.

According to the research team, led by Kaijun Wang from the Zhejiang University Eye Center in China, high pillows change the position of the neck and can compress the jugular vein, preventing the normal drainage of fluid inside the eye and increasing intraocular pressure.

The study involved 144 people with glaucoma, who were tested sleeping both with two pillows that raised their heads from 20 to 35 degrees, and without a pillow. Measurements showed that eye pressure was significantly higher when the head was elevated.

The researchers also noted that the high-pillow position lowered ocular perfusion pressure, which is essential for blood circulation in the small vessels of the eye, with potentially negative consequences for long-term vision health.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in people over 60. Researchers point out that avoiding sleeping positions that cause venous compression may be a simple but effective additional strategy in the long-term management of this disease./ CNA
