New genetic study: Many psychiatric disorders have common roots

A large study, published in the journal Nature, found that many psychiatric disorders that are now considered fundamentally different, including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, have many common genetic underpinnings.

Researchers analyzed data collected from over 1 million patients with mental disorders and 5 million people without diagnoses, and found 238 genetic variants shared between 14 different diagnoses.

Psychiatric disorders were divided into five major groups based on genetic similarities, suggesting that many cases may share the same underlying biological mechanisms.

Bipolar disorder and schizophrenia share about 70% of the same genetic drivers, challenging the strong diagnostic divisions between them.

These discoveries open up possibilities for new therapeutic approaches, where focusing on the biology of the disorders can help with more personalized and precise treatments.

Experts emphasize that genetics is only part of the story and that environmental factors, stress and life experiences also play a role in the development of mental illness. However, this study is considered an important step towards a psychiatry more based on brain biology than just observed symptoms./ CNA
