Promising vaccine for aggressive melanoma may have anti-tumor effects

An experimental skin cancer vaccine developed by pharmaceutical companies Moderna and Merck has shown promising results after five years of clinical trials. The therapy appears to have potent anti-tumor effects and survival benefits for patients with advanced melanoma.

How the therapy works:

The vaccine includes Moderna's personalized mRNA technology, called autogene intismeran, combined with Merck's immunotherapy drug Keytruda.

This combination treatment reduces the risk of cancer coming back or dying by about 49% in patients with high-risk melanoma, compared with treatment with Keytruda alone. The mRNA works by “training” immune system cells to recognize the unique markings of cancer cells, while Keytruda blocks proteins that tumors use to hide from the immune system. This helps T cells attack tumor cells more effectively.

The results so far are driven by five years of follow-up after surgery in melanoma patients who were treated. The therapy is currently in phase two clinical trials, and the companies are awaiting results from phase three, the final step of testing to confirm the benefits in a larger number of patients.

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer, characterized by the uncontrolled growth of cells that produce melanin. In recent years, the incidence of melanoma has increased, with hundreds of thousands of new cases diagnosed worldwide each year. The new therapy targets high-risk cases, which often return even after surgical removal.

In addition to melanoma, Moderna and Merck are testing the same technology in other cancers, such as lung, bladder and kidney, in the hope that it could offer similar benefits there as well.
