7 types of rest we need according to Harvard studies

Even if we get enough sleep, many people wake up feeling tired or mentally “foggy,” even after getting the amount of hours of sleep that experts recommend. When doctors don’t find any health problems, one question remains: why can’t the body and mind truly rest?

One possibility is that we often limit rest to sleep, but in reality, sleep is only one form of rest and there are other forms that we often miss more.

1. Physical rest

Sleep and naps are important, but even gentle movements like walking, yoga, or stretching are considered active forms of physical rest.

2. Mental rest

When your mind is racing and you have difficulty concentrating, thinking, or processing information, you may need a mental break. The practice of writing down your tasks before bed helps your brain to “shut down” the day’s work.

3. Spiritual rest

A sense of emptiness, which makes you feel strange or disconnected, may be a sign that you need a spiritual break. This doesn't just mean religious practice, but also connecting with nature, volunteer work, or community involvement that makes you feel whole.

4. Sensor break

Constant exposure to screens, sounds, and notifications can lead to nervous system overload. Avoiding devices, dimming lights, or quieting down can help the system “restore.”

5. Creative vacation

It's not just for artists, feeling stuck, lacking inspiration, or having trouble coming up with ideas are signs that you need a creative break. Looking at art, nature, or being exposed to beauty helps reconnect the creative mind.

6. Emotional break

Constantly caring for others, whether it's children or a sick relative, can be emotionally draining. Emotional rest involves expressing feelings without fear of judgment, by writing in a journal or talking to a trusted friend.

7. Social leave

Not all social contact is restorative. When you feel tired or lonely even when you're with people, then you need a social break, saying "no" to invitations that weigh you down and investing more in relationships that make you feel good./ CNA
