Staying up late is linked to poorer heart health

People who stay up late and are more active at night may have a higher risk of heart disease, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

The research analyzed data from over 322,000 adults as part of the UK Biobank study and found that individuals with an evening chronotype had poorer cardiovascular health compared to those who wake up early or those who have no pronounced preference for sleep schedule.

According to the study's lead author, Dr. Sina Kianersi of Harvard Medical School, the link between staying up at night and poor heart health was particularly strong in women. People who didn't sleep at night were about 79% more likely to have poor cardiovascular health and a higher risk of heart attack or stroke over a follow-up period of nearly 14 years.

Experts point out that this risk is often linked to unhealthy habits such as poor diet, lack of physical activity, smoking, and irregular sleep and meal schedules.

However, the researchers emphasize that the risk is not inevitable. "Heart disease is not a given for those who don't sleep at night," said Dr. Kristen Knutson of Northwestern University. She and other experts recommend improving sleep quality, getting regular physical activity, quitting smoking and controlling blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.

The study is observational and does not prove that chronotype directly causes heart disease, but it shows that lifestyle plays a key role in protecting cardiovascular health./ CNA
