WHO: Risk of Nipah virus spread from India is low, no signs of spread

The World Health Organization said Friday that the risk of Nipah virus transmission is considered low nationally, regionally and globally after two cases were confirmed in India. None of the more than 190 people who came into contact with the infected have tested positive or shown symptoms of the disease.

The WHO noted that both patients are hospitalized and the condition of one of them is improving. Neither of them traveled while symptomatic, which helps limit transmission.

Several Asian countries such as Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam have increased checks at airports as a precaution after reports of infections, but the WHO has found no worrying evidence of the virus spreading between people.

The WHO is awaiting the release of the genetic sequence of the virus by Indian authorities to assess whether there are any mutations, but so far there is no specific evidence to raise concern.

Nipah viruses are usually transmitted by fruit flies and animals such as pigs, and can cause fever, brain inflammation and have a high mortality rate (40–75%). There is currently no specific cure and vaccines are still under development. /CNA
