Reuters: US evidence of Russian hypersonic missiles in Belarus

Russia may be developing hypersonic ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads at a former air base in eastern Belarus.

This is what two American researchers have concluded after analyzing satellite images, a development that could significantly increase Moscow's ability to strike targets throughout Europe.

Their assessment broadly aligns with US intelligence findings, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has made clear his intention to deploy medium-range Oreshnik missiles in Belarus, with an estimated range of up to 5,500 km. However, the exact location of their deployment has not been known until now.

According to some experts, the deployment of Oreshnik indicates the Kremlin's choice of the threat of nuclear weapons as part of its efforts to prevent NATO member states from supplying Kiev with weapons systems capable of striking deep into Russian territory.

The Russian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment, while the Belarusian embassy declined to comment. The state-run Belta news agency reported, citing Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin, that the deployment of the Oreshniks does not change the balance of power in Europe and is a response to aggressive actions by the West.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment, while the CIA declined to comment.
