Efforts to impose martial law/Here's how many years in prison are being

South Korean prosecutors have requested a 10-year prison sentence for former President Yoon Suk-yeol for obstruction of justice and other charges related to his 2024 attempt to impose martial law in the country. The sentence for the former president was requested during the final hearing of Yoon's trial at the Seoul Central District Court.

The trial focuses on allegations that the former president obstructed justice by preventing investigators from arresting him in January, violated the rights of nine ousted cabinet members over his martial law plan, and drafted and destroyed a revised proclamation after the decree was lifted.

Yoon is also facing three other trials related to his failed attempt to declare martial law, including charges of leading an insurrection. The obstruction of justice case is expected to conclude first, with a verdict expected on January 16, while the insurrection trial could last until February.

Yoon was arrested and indicted for leading an uprising in January, becoming the first sitting president to be taken into custody. After being released in March, Yoon was arrested again in July and remains in custody. The former president was formally removed from office by South Korea's Constitutional Court in April. /CNA
