Iran warns Bulgaria not to allow US to use its bases

The spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry warned Bulgaria not to allow the United States to use its bases for military operations against the Islamic Republic.

Esmail Baqaei said on July 21 that any participation and cooperation in the preparation and implementation of the US attacks “will be considered complicity in committing the crime of aggression and war crimes.”

Bulgarian Prime Minister Roman Radev has said he will seek parliamentary approval for the deployment of up to eight US tanker aircraft to an air base in the country.

Bulgaria is a member of NATO and the European Union.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei said he was surprised by Radev's statements, adding: "Making the territory of one state available for use by another state with the aim of carrying out an act of aggression against a third state is considered an act of aggression."

He said he hopes the Bulgarian Parliament will reject the request for the US to be given permission to use the air base in Bulgaria.

Since the US and Israeli attacks on Iran began in late February, Washington has repeatedly criticized European NATO states for not supporting the war.

US President Donald Trump has said that "we are disappointed with the majority" of European NATO states.

But NATO chief Mark Rutte has said that a number of US military bases in Europe have been used in operations against the Islamic Republic. /REL
